Homer-bound

This is as far west as we are going (can anyone go further West?) so started a new page.

We are at Ocean Shores RV campground in Homer – it has to be the most breathtaking so far. We are going on a bear viewing trip by boat for 8 hours from 3:30pm to 11:30pm later today! This may be my last post…..

We survived the close encounters with the bears.

Leaving Homer in our wake

Phew – the 2 hour boat ride was a tad bumpy but we did get to great spots to walk and find the bears.

We were all hunched down in a group

UPDATE – Tsunami warning (after 7.2 earthquake) for Homer downgraded to Advisory – fortunately our campsite is 100 ft above the beach.

Alaskan Cowboy

This guy was on Homer beach at low tide today. He gets to see the great view coming and going…..

We headed off to Soldotna where we had arranged a “fly-out” for fishing and more bear viewing the next day. We drove around the Soldotna area that was jammed with-packed by fishermen because of the Silver (King Salmon) run.

These King Salmon were caught in the Kenai River
Our ride to Wolverine Creek

We had a fun half day fishing and bear viewing once we landed in Wolverine Creek. Our little RV freezer is now filled with Sockeye Salmon.

We were headed to Talkeetna and then Denali but weather looks a bit crappy so we detoured to Hidden Lake near Kenai but no vacant sites (after 20 miles on washboard gravel) so we detoured to the coastal town of Seward and reluctantly chose a KOA to catch up on laundry (has to be the worst thing about RV travel).

Seward was a nice little town with a fantastic coffee and bakery in a restored church. After a few delicious pastries and coffee we were off to Talkeetna (free overnight spot at the Elementary School).

Resurrect Art Coffee House

Just before Anchorage we pulled over for lunch and to stretch our legs at Potters Marsh but I had trouble braking in time to make the turn. I barely made it with a disapproving (WTF) look from my Navigator.

Bird watching from the Boardwalk

After our lunch and walk on the boardwalk I checked the “buddy” braking system on the Chevy and found it inoperative! No wonder I had trouble bringing the rig to a stop.

We hobbled into Anchorage and found a Blue Ox dealer who identified the problem in a matter of minutes (blown fuse) and we were on our way (no charge)!

Talkeetna is a cool place, quirky with good restaurants and we had a restful night at the school. In the morning we inquired about sightseeing flights and K2 had one, including a glacier landing, leaving in 2 minutes (room for 1) so off I went.

I will start a new page with pictures and videos of the flight – very cool!
